"When I'm coaching somebody and they finally get that their body's been telling them something that their mind was overriding, I feel that moment. I get a crown tingle. Sometimes I'll get chills on my legs, like my quads or my arms. There will usually be a tickly sensation. I interpret it as the divine confirming to me something that has been successfully communicated."
I've felt that confirmation more times than I can count, and I've learned to trust what it marks.

Most of those clients arrive skilled with every analytical tool ever sold to them and do not notice their own body's signals. Interoception, the nervous system's continuous readout of internal state, is the missing piece in how they decide, and I laid out the science in interoception for business decisions.
"People gaslight themselves by dismissing their inner knowing. Sometimes you know that a relationship isn't going to work out, or that the bad hire is not going to get any better. You have these conclusions that you come to almost immediately, and we gaslight ourselves: I don't want to be unfair or too impulsive, because that's what the rest of the world projects on us when we're decisive."
I've been building the counter-argument for a long time on the Body Wisdom hub, and the research has finally caught up with what my clients' bodies already know.
The Somatic Marker Hypothesis
Antonio Damasio spent decades arguing that emotion guides decision-making through signals from the body itself. Working with Antoine Bechara at the University of Iowa, he ran what became the Iowa Gambling Task: volunteers drew cards from four decks, two of them quietly rigged to ruin the player, and their skin conductance spiked before risky draws, dozens of cards before they could say which decks were bad. The somatic marker hypothesis holds that the body registers the trap before the conscious mind can name it.
Read that gap again: dozens of cards. The hand knew, measurably and repeatedly, long before the mouth could explain anything. In coaching terms, that is the quarterly review where the founder already knows the partnership is failing but cannot yet produce the slide deck that proves it. The signal arrives first. Articulation arrives later, if you let it.
Patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the region Damasio tied to processing these markers, kept their IQs and lost their ability to choose well in ordinary life. My coaching translation is blunter: a client who overrides chest tightness and mounting fatigue quarter after quarter is producing, through repeated dismissal, the effect that lesion produces.
What Interoceptive Accuracy Actually Measures
Interoceptive accuracy is a lab number, the gap between how many heartbeats you think you have and how many you actually have. Sarah Garfinkel at the University of Sussex built much of the modern literature on this heartbeat detection task, as the review Threat and the Body: How the Heart Supports Fear Processing in Trends in Cognitive Sciences lays out. The trading-floor paper's own background section notes that people with greater interoceptive accuracy, measured by heartbeat detection, perform better in laboratory studies of risky decision-making.
Scores vary widely among people, which explains why some people notice fatigue signals early while others are caught off guard by exhaustion they never felt building. A Psychology Today synthesis on body signals and choice makes the same point for a general audience. In my sessions the measurement has locations and qualities: "I want them to pay attention to their body and what it's doing. I want them to realize that they've been shallow breathing, so they may take a big deep breath instead. They notice their posture, that their shoulders have been rolling inward in a protective posture. They roll their shoulders backwards so that their chest is exposed and high and proud."
The lab measures heartbeats because heartbeats are countable. My sessions measure posture, breath depth, and the felt difference between open and compressed, because those are the channels a founder can actually check in the 90 seconds before a call. The underlying skill is the same one: attending to an internal signal that was already firing whether or not anyone listened.
What the Trading Floor Proved
The strongest evidence I know comes from a 2016 study in Scientific Reports, Interoceptive Ability Predicts Survival on a London Trading Floor. Kandasamy, Garfinkel, Critchley, and colleagues tested 18 traders on a working floor and found that heartbeat detection accuracy predicted both relative profitability and the number of years a trader had survived in the market.
The PubMed record for the same study carries the detail I find most striking: traders as a group detected their own heartbeats more accurately than matched non-traders, and the advantage grew with experience. The sample was small and the design correlational, which earns it a caution label. Even under that label, it converges with two decades of Iowa Gambling Task data, and it's the study I would defend in a room full of skeptics.
A correlational study with 18 participants should change nobody's entire worldview, and I tell clients exactly that. What it does is put a number on something the gambling task had already shown from another angle: the people who register internal signals make better calls under uncertainty, and the people who survive the longest in uncertain environments register those signals best. Two methods, two populations, one direction.
"They have brilliant brains and their bodies are already telling them: it's fatigue, it's not being able to push as hard in workouts, their HRV is dipping, their resting heart rate is rising, there's different ways that our body signals stress, and a lot of them will say it's this season, it's for right now, I'll deal with it later."
The trader who reads his heartbeat survives, and the founder who reads her HRV (heart rate variability) trend survives. "Your body will break down or something in your life will break, whether it's relationships or your inner reserves. You can't go on that forever because we're not robots. We're biological beings."
The Contested Evidence
A computational analysis, Unreliable Gut Feelings Can Lead to Correct Decisions, models somatic markers inside non-linear decision chains and finds that individually unreliable signals can still aggregate into correct choices, which complicates any version where the body is always right.
The training literature is weaker still. A trial on interoceptive training for decision-making, anxiety, and somatic symptoms reported modest, mixed effects from small samples, and I read it as a finding that needs more research before anyone treats it as reliable. The trading-floor finding survives scrutiny; this one gets a flagged footnote.
I keep this section in the piece on purpose. Any practice sold as infallible deserves suspicion, and the scan I teach is a check on the analysis rather than a verdict delivered from somewhere beyond it. The honest position is that the body carries information the spreadsheet lacks, and the spreadsheet carries information the body lacks, and the skill is holding both at once.
The Practice: A 90-Second Body Scan Before You Decide
"I'm looking for power instead of force. I'm looking for a way that is easeful and flow-based, and that's where the effort is applied rather than trying to push a rock uphill."
That sentence is why this practice takes 90 seconds instead of 90 minutes. Run it in your chair, in the 90 seconds before the call where a yes or a no carries weight. Even brief practice has lab support: a study on brief body-scan meditation practice improves somatosensory perceptual decision making found that a short body-scan session improved perceptual discrimination.
- Put both feet on the floor and take one slow breath all the way down. Notice where the breath goes; sustained shallow breathing produces specific, recognizable effects in my body: "The shallow breathing for an extended period made me feel claustrophobic, like I was going to faint, and I started to feel generally unwell and I needed fresh air."
- Check your shoulders next. Rolled inward and protective, or rolled back with the chest exposed and high and proud? Overstimulation announces itself for me like this: "I also felt overstimulated. There's so much noise or loud voices, and it's poke, poke, poke, poke, poking at me, there's the pressure building up."
- Then run the alignment contrast I use with every client: "For sensation, where the vision and execution are aligned, your body feels open. There's no heat, no compression. It's open. You're prepared, in flow, and when you're misaligned, there's frustration and jerky starts." Ask which of the two states this decision falls into: open, or heat and compression.
- The wearable's reading counts too. Check this week's HRV trend and your resting heart rate against your own baseline; when the strap and the sternum agree, believe them.
- The decision itself gets made using the model and the marker together. The analysis stays in the room, and the scan checks it rather than replacing it.
The traders who lasted on that London floor could feel their own heartbeats. My clients who last learn to feel the shallow breathing and the inward roll of the shoulders before the quarter breaks them.
