You may have heard the old line that relationships are there "for a reason, a season, or a lifetime."
I find it’s a helpful sorting question.
Sometimes the ache in your relationships is a categorization error. For example, you may have held a “season” relationship like it was a “lifetime” relationship, and because of that expectation mismatch, it felt like failure when the relationship ended.
Or perhaps a “reason” relationship completed its work and you dragged it along out of guilt. That creates an ongoing attention tax that can drain you in other places.
Can you see how evaluating your relationships in these categories (compassionately yet truthfully) might enable more peace and ease in your life?
The trick is that from the inside, it’s hard to feel in real time how a “reason” relationship is different from a “season” relationship, and sometimes the “lifetime” relationships change form suddenly.
A fully honored “season” relationship beats a forced “lifetime” relationship every time.
