It's a simple premise backed up by new research out of Johns Hopkins: To sleep better, lose weight. It doesn't matter whether you shed pounds due to diet or exercise -- weight loss of any kind leads to improvements in restlessness, fatigue, sleep apnea and insomnia.
"We found that improvement in sleep quality was significantly associated with overall weight loss, especially belly fat," said Kerry Stewart, the study's senior author, to Futurity. "The key ingredient for improved sleep quality from our study was a reduction in overall body fat, and, in particular belly fat, which was true no matter the age or gender of the participants or whether the weight loss came from diet alone or diet plus exercise."
